We’re used to having stay at home moms. It’s no news. But stay-at-home dads? Not so much. If this is your making, then we respect your decisions and reasons. But for others, they’re stay at home dads because of circumstances beyond their control.
There are stories of stay-at-home dads feeling depressed and in need of help. Others are considering any viable means to ease the mental stress that comes along with it. One source of help you should definitely consider is the government.
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE FOR STAY-AT-HOME DADS
Honestly, there is no specific government-led assistance targeted at stay-at-home dads. So, you should look for programs that you qualify for, based on other criteria. Here are a list of them:
- The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children
- Resources for Military and Veteran Families
- Government-Led Grant Opportunities
You can apply for government unemployment assistance programs. Careeronestop.org can help you in this regard. They provide services services such as:
- Unemployment insurance benefits,
- Job training, and
- Finding a job
The USDA’S Food and Nutrition Service(FNS) has a food assistance program called SNAP but it’s not necessarily for stay at home dads
It’s for lower income individuals and you would have to meet the income requirements
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a Federal program that provides nutrition benefits to low-income individuals and families that are used at stores to purchase food. The program is administered by State and local agencies.
Also known as the WIC program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children is a health program that is targeted at low income women, breastfeeding women and children 5 years and below.
From its name you can tell that a stay home dad is not included in this program. But there are 2 ways of getting assistance, either direct assistance or indirect assistance. If you’re a stay at home dad, you can inquire if your children are eligible for this. They provide support in form of:
- Nutritious foods to supplement diets,
- Promotion and support, and
- Referrals to health care.
This is for the military dads. Serving in the military can be exciting. Sadly for many ex-fighters, readjusting to civilian lives can be daunting can going on an El-Chapo raid with a knife and a pair of boots.
If you find yourself in this situation, as a stay home military dad, you can rely on the government’s program for Military and Vet families.
This program helps families of Vets to have nutritional meals. Of course you can’t rely exclusively on this, but it can help reduce your expenses. So give it a shot.
Apart for providing basic commodities, medical and other assistance, the government do provide grant. Of course, these grants are not labeled: “for stay at home dads.” But you can apply for them based on other merits.

IS STAY AT HOME DAD AN OCCUPATION?
In this context the word occupation carries the idea of: “the principal business of one’s life”. If this is the accepted understanding then the answer to this question is: No. Stay at home dad is not an occupation.
Circumstances might make an adult with kids to stay at home with his family. Or maybe it was a mutual understanding between the couple. In that case the decision of the couple should be respected. However, it is important to know that, taking financial care of a family is mainly the duty the dad.
Of course, there are circumstances where the wife or mom earns more than the man. The ladies in this case might contribute more to the family finances than the dad.
They might decide that the kids needs a full time care. And they don’t want to introduce a nanny to the home. It might seem logical that the person providing the main income for the family should keep working while the dad might choose to stay home to care for his kids. In this situation it will be beneath a man’s dignity to see his role as a stay-at-home dad to be his occupation.
In cases of low financial strength, it might be better to seek government or other assistance. Anything to provide for the children. However these assistance are not meant to replace the duty of a parent to care for his family.
Fathers who seek this avenue should view it as a temporary provision until he is able to get a consistent means of income.
